FxBonusHub Glossary: How Forex Bonuses Really Work

The short answer

A forex bonus is credit a broker lends you to trade with. You rarely withdraw the credit itself. What you can keep is the profit it helps you make, after you trade a set number of lots, verify your identity and finish inside the deadline. Read the lot rule, the profit cap and the expiry date before you accept any offer.

The nine bonus types you will meet

Brokers dress offers up with different names, but nearly every promotion fits one of these nine shapes. Knowing the shape tells you how the money behaves before you read a single line of terms.

0$

No deposit bonus

Free credit on a new live account. You risk nothing, and profit becomes withdrawable once you meet the volume rule.

$10–$150 · Best for beginners
%

Deposit bonus

A match on what you fund, from 20% to 120%. It adds margin, but withdrawing your deposit early usually removes it.

20%–120% · Best for funded traders
★

Welcome bonus

A first-account reward, paid as a fixed amount or a percentage. Often a no deposit or deposit bonus under a friendlier name.

Fixed $ or % · New clients
↺

Cash-back rebate

Money back on every lot you close, win or lose. Unlike credit, rebates are usually real cash you can withdraw.

$2–$15 / lot · Active traders
▲

Demo contest

Free to enter on a practice account. Rankings decide real cash prizes, so you can win without risking a cent.

Cash prizes · Strategy testing
◆

Live contest

Ranked on real-money accounts, with bigger prizes such as cash, laptops, cars and trips. Your own deposit is at risk.

Large prizes · Experienced traders
⇄

Refer-a-friend

A reward when someone you invite opens and funds an account. Check whether the friend has to trade a minimum volume.

Per referral · Community traders
⚡

Tradable credit

Bonus that can absorb losses as well as add margin. Rarer and more generous, so read the stop-out rules closely.

10%–50% · Swing traders
♛

Loyalty rewards

Points earned per lot that convert into cash, credit or gifts. Value builds slowly but needs no extra deposit.

Points per lot · Long-term clients

Where the bonus money actually goes

Your terminal shows two separate pots. Balance is your own money plus closed profit. Credit is the broker's bonus. Both count toward equity, so the bonus lets you open trades, but only the balance can leave the account.

The credit itself normally disappears at the moment you withdraw. Plan on keeping the profit, not the bonus.

Two offers, worked through

No deposit

$30 credit, 3-lot rule

You claim a $30 credit. The terms ask for 3 lots within 30 days and cap withdrawable profit at $50. You close the period $45 up.
Outcome: after 3 lots and ID checks you withdraw $45. The $30 credit is removed.
Deposit match

$500 + 100% bonus

You fund $500 and receive $500 credit, so you trade with $1,000 of equity. The rule is 1 lot per $10 of bonus, which means 50 lots.
Outcome: your own $500 stays yours, but taking it out before 50 lots usually cancels the bonus.

Figures are illustrations. Every broker sets its own volume rule, cap and deadline.

What happens when a trade goes wrong

This is the rule most traders discover too late. In many programmes the broker takes losses from your balance first and only touches the credit once your own money is gone. When the balance reaches zero, the remaining credit is often cancelled and open positions are closed at the stop-out level.

  1. Losses hit your balanceYour deposit and closed profit absorb the drawdown first.
  2. Balance reaches zeroThe broker treats the bonus as no longer supported.
  3. Credit is cancelledPositions close automatically at the stop-out level.

Takeaway: a bonus keeps you in trades longer, but it does not protect your deposit. Size positions on your own balance, not on balance plus credit.

Is a bonus worth taking?

When it helps

  • Lets you test a broker's execution and withdrawals with no money at risk
  • Gives small accounts room to ride out normal price swings
  • Rebates cut your cost on every lot you trade
  • Contests reward skill with cash and funded accounts

When it hurts

  • Volume targets push you to trade more than your plan says
  • Early withdrawals can wipe the bonus and its profit
  • Caps and deadlines shrink what you actually keep
  • Some offers ban scalping, hedging or Expert Advisors

Bonus rules differ by region

Where a broker is licensed decides whether it may offer a bonus to you at all. This is why the biggest offers come from brokers serving Asia, Africa and Latin America.

European UnionRestricted

ESMA's 2018 CFD measures stopped regulated brokers giving retail clients monetary or non-monetary trading bonuses.

United KingdomRestricted

The FCA made similar CFD rules permanent, so UK-licensed brokers do not offer retail trading bonuses.

AustraliaRestricted

ASIC's 2021 CFD product intervention order bans inducements such as bonuses and rebates for retail clients.

Asia, Africa, LatAmWidely offered

Brokers licensed offshore or in local jurisdictions commonly run no deposit, deposit and contest offers.

An offer aimed at your country does not mean your local regulator supervises the broker. Check which entity will hold your account.

Six-point broker checklist

Tick each point once you have confirmed it for the offer you are considering.

Frequently asked questions

What is a forex no deposit bonus?

Free credit added to a new live account without any deposit. You trade real markets with it and can usually withdraw the profit once you meet the volume rule.

Can I withdraw the bonus itself?

Rarely. The credit stays with the broker. Profit earned with it becomes withdrawable after the required lots, inside the deadline, once your account is verified.

No deposit or deposit bonus: which is better?

A no deposit bonus suits beginners testing a broker without risk. A deposit bonus suits traders who already plan to fund an account and want more margin, but its conditions are stricter.

Can I claim bonuses from several brokers?

Yes, one per broker. Most brokers allow a single bonus per person, household, device or IP address.

Why do EU and UK brokers not offer bonuses?

Regulators there restrict trading incentives for retail CFD clients, so licensed brokers in those regions do not run bonus promotions for retail accounts.

Are forex bonuses safe?

They are reasonable when a regulated broker publishes clear terms. Leveraged trading can still lose more than the bonus is worth, so size positions on your own money.
